GLOTIGAM EDA

DESCRIPTION

FLOTIGAM® EDA is specifically intended for use in the flotation of quartz and acidic silicate minerals. For instance, it is suitable for the following processes:  Inverse iron ore flotation during which worthless quartz is floated and the valuable iron concentrate constitutes the flotation tailings (see example below).  Cleaning of phosphate concentrates which have been floated with anionic collectors. Quartz flotation must then be preceded by a conditioning treatment in which the anionic collector is removed from the surface of apatite or phosphorite by sulphuric acid.  Preliminary flotation of quartz and silicate minerals from magnesite ores. The separation of magnesite from other carbonate minerals takes place in a second flotation stage with anionic collectors.

APPLICATION

FLOTIGAM EDA can be used in undiluted form or as an aqueous dispersion. The addition of the product as a dispersion ensures thorough, rapid distribution of the amine in the flotation pulp. If the product is added in undiluted form, flotation should, if possible, be preceded by conditioning at high pulp density (50 - 60 % solids content). When carrying out laboratory trials, it is important to keep to the same temperature throughout the trial series to ensure comparative and reproducible results

DOSAGE

In the usual application concentration (25 - 100 g/t) FLOTIGAM EDA gives rise to moderate frothing which can generally be controlled without difficulty. Frothing and froth stability are greatly influenced by the pH of the flotation pulp. The optimum flotation pH is in the range of 8 - 9.

HANDLING

The stability of the fatty amine salts of organic acids is not as good as that of free amines since they tend to dissociate into water and acid amides. This applies especially when they are stored under warm conditions. In our experience, FLOTIGAM EDA remains fully effective for at least one year if its storage temperature does not significantly exceed 40 °C. FLOTIGAM EDA gels or solidifies when cooled excessively, but will revert to its original liquid condition when heated briefly to a temperature not exceeding 50 °C. The effectiveness of the product is not affected by this change in consistency.

MATERIALS OF CONSTRUCTION Like other fatty amines, FLOTIGAM EDA exerts a softening and solubilizing action on most plastics. In our experience, stainless steel, pure aluminium, enamel, and polytetrafluoroethylene (HOSTAFLON®) have proved resistant to this product. This should be considered in the choice of construction materials for pipe and metering equipment.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

As with other fatty amines, special care should be taken when handling FOTIGAM EDA. In particular, protective gloves, safety glasses, protective clothing and a dust mask or respirator should be worn. When handling product, avoid contact with the skin or mucous membranes. Any areas of the skin that have been exposed to product must be washed with soap and water immediately. If the eyes are splashed, rinse with copious amounts of water and consult a doctor. If ingested, rinse mouth thoroughly and drink plenty of water. In all cases, immediate medical attention is advised. In case of inhalation, immediately remove to fresh air. Consult a physician if irritating symptoms develop and persist.
